Rockford Road Library

Preserving Place, Renewing Purpose

For more than five decades, the Rockford Road Library has been a beacon of connection, curiosity, and learning in Crystal, Minnesota. Nestled in the heart of the community, this single-story structure, built in 1970, has welcomed generations of readers, learners, and neighbors through its doors. But like many well-loved public buildings, time had left its mark. What began as a functional need to address aging systems and infrastructure quickly evolved into something more profound—a thoughtful investment in the library’s future, and in the continued vitality of the community it serves.

In collaboration with Hennepin County, Mohagen Hansen was honored to help reimagine and preserve this important civic space. Exterior improvements addressed critical long-term preservation needs such as a roof replacement, new windows, and façade improvements with modern, durable systems designed to protect the building for decades to come. A new photovoltaic array supports sustainability goals, while the refreshed entry canopy creates a bold, welcoming gesture to patrons.

Inside, the transformation is equally impactful. Mechanical and electrical system upgradesincrease comfort and efficiency, while new finishes, furnishings, andtechnology create a bright, modern environment. Spaces have been thoughtfullyreconfigured to support both quiet study and community gathering, with awelcoming service desk and vibrant children’s area.
