State of Minnesota Child and Adolescent Behavioral Health Services Hospital
Willmar, MN
Safe, Supportive Design – Centered on Youth
In collaboration with New York-based firm, Architecture+, Mohagen Hansen was selected by the State of Minnesota to lead the pre-design and design phases for a new adolescent behavioral health facility in Willmar, MN. This 16-bed, freestanding hospital will provide critical inpatient services for children and adolescents aged 6 to 18, addressing the growing need for specialized mental health care in a thoughtfully designed environment.
During the pre-design phase, our team worked closely with the State to define the project scope, conduct site analysis and selection, establish key objectives, and develop a reliable budget and schedule. The resulting facility is carefully crafted to support healing and well-being, featuring Quiet Lounges, Seclusion Rooms, Private Patient Rooms, Consultation Spaces, a Family Lounge, a large Commons, a Social and Dining area, a Day Lounge, a Comfort Sensory Room, Physician Offices, and secure outdoor courtyards. Every space is intentionally designed to foster safety, dignity, and therapeutic engagement.
Ligature-resistant fixtures and finishes are seamlessly integrated into the design, balancing function with aesthetics to ensure a secure and calming environment. Thoughtful design elements—such as lowered ceiling soffits for comfort, vibrant nature-inspired murals, and a centralized commons for clear staff sightlines—create a space that nurtures healing while accommodating a diverse age group.
