Architect of the Year: Congratulations to Our Own Steve Oliver!

May 14, 2025

We’re incredibly proud (and not at all surprised) to share that our Principal, Steve Oliver, has been named Architect of the Year by the Minneapolis Real Estate Journal!

This recognition is more than well-deserved—it’s a reflection of the leadership, heart, and creativity Steve brings to Mohagen Hansen every single day. As we look ahead to an exciting new chapter in our firm’s story, Steve has been a steady hand and a bold visionary, helping guide us through complex challenges with clarity, energy, and purpose.

Whether he’s managing large-scale developments or brainstorming in the office, Steve’s approach is rooted in curiosity, collaboration, and a deep understanding of the industries and people we serve. He’s a dynamic problem-solver—equally at home translating complex needs into innovative solutions as he is mentoring the next generation of architects. (Spoiler: he’s really good at both.)

One of the things we admire most about Steve? He doesn’t just talk about using architecture to make a difference—he lives it. Once or twice a year, he travels to Costa Rica, where he volunteers his time and talents to build critical infrastructure for underserved communities. These hands-on experiences not only reflect his generous spirit, but also deepen his design philosophy, reminding us that good architecture is as much about impact as it is about aesthetics.

Team Ridgewood using physics, ancient building techniques, and brute strength to set 600-pound concrete pipes for stormwater infrastructure at Roblealto’s shelter for children.

At Roblealto Child Care Associations' temporary shelter for children, the needs for volunteer labor are endless and the reward of being able to serve the children and staff there each year is a privilege that Steve cherishes and finds great fulfillment in. Connection is important in how we work at Mohagen Hansen and the connections Steve has made in the last two decades of service in Costa Rica are an example of the impact and satisfaction that comes when people are your priority.

Sketches help pass important information on to the next volunteer team so that they can quickly ramp up their efforts.

With over 35 years of experience, Steve’s influence is far-reaching—but his focus remains on the people around him. He leads with humility, mentors with intention, and inspires with integrity. This award celebrates his remarkable achievements, but even more so, it highlights the kind of leader he is: one who lifts others up, challenges the status quo, and believes in architecture as a force for good.

So, from all of us:
Congratulations, Steve! We’re grateful to work alongside you, and we can’t wait to see what’s next.
